WEEK 13: SPECULATIONS ABOUT PAST AND FUTURE

Today we are going to learn about HOW TO SPECULATE THE PAST AND THE FUTURE...

To do that, we need to learn about CONDITIONALS.

If you notice the conversation, the speaker uses conditional sentences to describe hypothetical conditions or conditions that happen in the past. Conditions biasanya menjelaskan KALIMAT PENGANDAIAN, atau KONDISI = SYARAT, karena untuk satu kejadian bisa terjadi, ada syarat atau kondisi yang harus dipenuhi.

Conditionals are a commonly-used grammar structure that describe the consequence of a condition or situation.

A full conditional sentence contains two parts, known as clauses; the main clause, also known as the consequence clause, and the condition clause. The main/consequence clause tells you the result of the condition. The condition clause tells you what might happen or might have happened.

The main and the conditional clauses of a conditional sentence can be used in either order:

Kita bisa membuat kalimat conditional dengan menyebutkan condition clause di awal ataupun di akhir, walaupun lazimnya biasanya di awal kalimat.

There are 4 types of conditionals, they are ZERO, 1ST, 2ND, and 3RD CONDITIONALS:

• 0 conditional untuk menjelaskan pengandaian yang sudah pasti, kemungkinan 100%. contoh: If you are a human being, you will die.
• 1st conditional untuk menjelaskan pengandaian di masa depan yg hampir pasti, 80%. Contoh: If it rains while you're outside, you'll get wet.
• 2nd conditional untuk menjelaskan pengandaian di masa depan yang mungkin tidak terjadi, atau yang kita harapkan akan terjadi, 10-50%. Contoh: If I won a million dollars, I would buy a new house. If I worked in PR, I would be very happy.
• 3rd conditional menjelaskan pengandaian di masa lalu... Yang mungkin tidak baik diucapkan karena penyesalan tiada guna 😉 Contoh: If I had learned English better, I wouldn't have gotten a bad mark in the exam.
